Nothing Gold Can Stay VOL.1
For the first volume of what will be an ongoing monthly series about really really excessively swanky stuff, I figured I’d write about the “World’s Most Expensive Car.” If you don’t know what that would be, drumroll please, that title belongs to the 2014 Lamborghini Veneno Roadster. Weighing in at a staggering $4.5 million this thing better be awesome! Now, I can think of a lot I’d rather do with $4.5 million but hey, if you’re going to dream, dream BIG!! Okay, let’s get to the car.
So what does $4.5 million buy you these days? Well, the Lamborghini Veneno was originally debuted at the 2013 Geneva motor show back in March, but this is the roadster version of said car. The Veneno coupe and roadster are being built to celebrate 50 years of Lamborghini. Now, the coupe version is a bargain at $3.9 million, but that’s not what we want right? If I’m spending this kind of money on a car, I want the biggest baddest thing out there! Cue the Roadster Veneno! Yep, $4.5 milly! Enough to make Lil Wayne develop a speech impediment. In case you missed the opportunity to park one of the three coupe versions in your driveway, have no fear! Lamborghini has announced that they will build nine roadsters.
According to Lamborghini this monster will do 0-60 in 2.9 seconds and keep on going all the way to 221mph!! This is all accomplished from the 6.5L 750hp V-12 under the bonnet. Bolted to that would be the seven-speed “ISR” tranny, all-wheel drive and a racing chassis with pushrod suspension and horizontal spring/damper units. The entire design of the Veneno has been laid out for perfect airflow and downforce. The front end works as a large spoiler. The visual division of the rear fenders from the car body is a reference to the world of racing cars and optimizes the aerodynamic flow. Even the wheels are over designed! A carbon-fiber ring around the outside of the wheel works like a turbine to deliver additional cooling air to the brakes! In less words, this is a street legal race car!
The entire chassis and body of the Veneno is made from carbon-fiber! It also dominates the interior of this work of art. Exposed carbon is seen throughout, including most of the dash and part of the seats.
This however isn’t just visual, it’s also evident on the scales. With a dry weight of just 3,278 pounds, the Veneno roadster benefits from the power to weight ratio of just 4.38lbs/hp. This guarantees a performance that is nothing short of mind-blowing!
Enough with the tiring numbers and performance statistics. I have always loved Lamborghini, they have always built a beautiful ‘Poster car.’ By this I simply mean something that young boys can only dream of; that one car that every kid has a poster of. Look back, in my opinion the Countach was the original poster car, followed by the Diablo and so on. Lamborghini just builds an absolutely insane car. Now the Veneno looks like its from another universe and I’ve yet to decide whether it’s sexy or repulsive. If buying one was an option, would I? No. That is absolutely insane way to spend nearly 5 million, but that’s what this series is all about; “really really excessively swanky stuff.”
